Elegant Weapons and Pantera

Live at Afas- Amsterdam, The Netherlands

June 20th, 2023

After a few days hanging at a friend in the Amsterdam district. I travelled on a Tuesday afternoon to Afas, Amsterdam to see one of the most famous bands from my youth era, Pantera.

But first a beer and support act, Elegant Weapons. Elegant Weapons is a Metal supergroup composed by guitarist Richie Faulkner from Judas Priest, vocalist Ronnie Romero of Rainbow, drummer Christopher Williams from Accept, and bassist Dave Rimmer from Uriah Heep. Fantastic musicianship, great singer and killer songs. The perfect band to support the Metal survivors from the nineties Pantera.

To talk about the Pantera gig In a nutshell. A trip down memory lane. All the 90s teens relived their old days again. A super tight concert with classics only. It was very enjoyable and the band, as well crowd went totally nuts. It’s really ages ago I saw such a fanatic crowd, especially over here in our spoiled Country, The Netherlands. The central pit was amazing. The crowd was loud and the band was full of energy. You can’t say, this is no Pantera! This because frontmen/singer Phill Anselmo found the perfect backing band for this reunion. All including my two childhood heroes Zakk Wylde (BLS, Ozzy Osbourne and more on guitar) and Charlie Benante (Anthrax and more on the drums). You could also see it also as a sort of tribute with big screens with all the old photos/videos from the classic line-up passing by. For sure this was not done for easy money or whatever. This was done by love and dedication and to give the fans a chance to have this Pantera moment. Especially for those who were born too late or missed them earlier. It was the perfect chance to enjoy the old tunes in a live way.

The sound in Afas was really great and the show was powerful and intense.  It was just way too hot (saving on a airco….?), also the security acted like we were criminals and I missed the final song “Cowboys From Hell”, this through shitty public transport. Nevertheless a really loud and insane show!
