Project Cipher is the sophomore release from Don Dewulf’s The Wring. For this effort he’s brought in veterans Marc Bonilla on vocals and Thomas Lang on drums (each of whom have a list of credits too long to list here). There’s not a lot of instrumental wankery here, with each of the songs clocking in at under 5 minutes. Don’s guitar playing is restrained and tasty, but venturing into pre-Shrapnel era Vinnie Moore territory on the instrumental track Cipher. The bass is prominent and stays busy and grooving. Overall, it’s a hard release to classify, one that listeners who enjoy heavy rock with just a bit of prog should check out.
