Damn, this is a pleasant surprise. Caveat hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and was formed in 2001. They are a progressive metal ensemble that isn't afraid to widen their horizons from very melodic to almost death metal heavy. And with only seven songs on the 49 minute during album Alchemy you can understand that they have taken their time to try and make every tune stand out. Have they succeeded? They have as far as I'm concerned, because I love this.

They sometimes remind me of Zero Hour, another  Canadian progressive band that wasn't afraid to delve into the heavier side of music. Big difference is that here you have a woman doing the singing, and it must be said, Amanda Marie Bourdon is doing a great job at ensuring it all makes sense. She is backed up by the vocal chords of guitarist Greg Musgrave, and the two af them work very well together.

The instrumental parts are just as impressive. Never do you get the feeling that these guys are winging it. No, they know exactly what they're doing and it shows, because there isn't one song that is less than the others. So no fillers, all killers. I love the threatening feel of the title track and the diversity of opener Silver, or even the heaviness of Infinite and the groovy side of Black Mirror. It's all beautiful music to my ears.

If you wish to order anything of Caveat, look up their bandcamp site. Unfortunately at the time of writing this album isn't available yet. Might be a good time to then try out their already available works first.
