Funeral is a Norwegian band that plays doom. I think it's quite obvios which sort of doom, as they have set out to be the most depressing band in the world. Have they succeeded? Well, not really, as they are too good to make you depressed. This is interesting stuff, this keeps you on your toes and your mind racing as to what will be next.

On the other hand, if you read about the history of the band, they must feel quite depressed, having lost two key members because of an overdose and a suicide. Even so, they play a kind of doom that isn't too slow, but more multi layered, with even some film music intertwined. What takes away most of the negativity are the voices used, as they range from very soft spoken to roughly shouted instead of purely grunting and barking everything into the microphone. Although they do that too, when the atmosphere allows it.

I for one like this quite a lot, and there is more than enough to like, as Praesentialis in Aeternum lasts for some 87 minutes. Enough to make you aware of your vulnerabilities, but also to expose this as quite a good album. Let's hope it's not their Funeral.
