It’s not very often that I get to review an album by a Moldovan band. Well, with Infected Rain I do have that honour. And I mean it, because I do like what I hear. Musically they hover over so many different genres it gets scary. I hear extreme metal, nu-metal, thrash metal and prog rock coming by, all in different degrees of commitment. Somehow

That makes this very modern sounding metal quite interesting. Infected Rain was formed in 2008 and with Ecdysis they are releasing their fifth full length album. And you can hear that they are an experienced bunch of people, as musically this really is as solid as the proverbial rock.

What makes all of this even more enticing is the voice of singer Elena "Lena Scissorhands" Cataraga, who has two very different ways of expressing herself. On the one hand she’s about the most aggressive screamer you can imagine a woman to be, which really enhances the heaviness and aggression in the music. On the other hand, she can sound even sweeter than any female gothic metal singer, giving the music that soft edge where it is needed. She effortlessly changes from one to the other, and that is impressive.

And even though I feel this is good, the songs themselves on Ecdysis are too much the same, taking away the much-needed diversity that makes this kind of music extra interesting. I am sure that it would have heightened my enjoyment of Infected Rain. Therefore, I advise to have a good listen and make your own mind up.
