How do someone from Brazil and another from the UK get together and start a collaboration? In this case we’re talking about respectively Antonio Ribeiro and Tom MacLean (ex-Haken/To-Mera). During the Covid pandemic both were stuck on their own continent, but through the digital possibilities available to us today they succeeded in not only writing, but also arranging and recording their debut album Athemon.

It is filled with progressive music riddled with mainly doom and some death metal influences. It goes from very slow and deliberate to quite fast and furious. But most of all it is all about the atmosphere, which is quite desolate, as if they realise that the end of days is nigh. The guys have obviously abandoned acknowledging any form of boundaries, as they are all over the place. Hardly surprising knowing that Tom MacLean was in Haken, another band that has always has had a lack of respect for boundaries. And just like with that band, you can’t help but be impressed with Athemon.

It is very clear that a lot of thought has gone into the songs, because as desperate as they may sound, they are bloody good. While I am typing this review the weather outside is very dark and dreary, which only enhances the downright depressing atmosphere. And still, somehow, I love it. So, if this is the start of a future for these two guys, I’m all for it!

This despairing piece of music is available through the Athemon Bandcamp site as a digital download or as a physical CD.
