Steegmoord actually means murder in the alley, so you can understand that it will make the music you get to hear of the not so happy variety. Steegmoord is actually a project by Belgian songwriter Maarten Doumen, and this is the second release by the band. The first one was an EP with six songs, just called Steegmoord.

The thing is, this really, really good. It reminds me of death metal era Opeth with some early Metallica and Machine Head thrown in when the songs request it. The diversity is enormous and the good thing is it never gets stale, it keeps you on your toes and has all the hallmarks of preventing boredom from setting in. It goes from left to right, from heavy to acoustic, and vice versa without ever letting up. The reason for that is the length of the songs, or rather the lack of extremely long songs.  Only the last one, Standing Alone, clocks in at 5:49 minutes. The rest is between 2:15 and 4:13 minutes, so, like I said, short enough to stay focused.

What amazes me is that it took me three listening sessions before I even realised that there are no vocals on Trepidation. That’s how good I feel this is musically. So far this is the best record I have heard in a long time. If I would have to rate this from1 to 10, it would be at least an 11. Which just shows that Steegmoord doesn’t need anyone maiming their songs by thinking they should be singing along.

I have asked, but this is only available as a digital download through the Steegmoord Bandcamp site, but I don’t have any Trepidation about ordering this one. Plus, their debut EP while I’m at it.
